CHARACTER
NAME: Mary Adler
CANON: Gifted
CANON-POINT: End of the movie.
DOSSIER
HISTORY: jeeps is magic and wrote a history and in the app below, i'll expand upon mary more.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?:
Mary is a genius. She's able to solve differential equations in her head without, basically, any hesitation. She is sweet and funny, she is also loyal to those who show her loyalty. And she is wise beyond her years while still being just a kid. She sees that Frank loves her for who she is and not what she can be, unlike her grandmother, who only shows up when it is revealed that Mary is also a math genius like the rest of her family. She's inquisitive, she asks questions and isn't afraid to do so, she also loves to learn (she's ready incredibly advanced math books and loves to do equations for fun).
She also stands up to bullies, although she did it a bit more violently than she should (she punched a bully in the face and broke his nose after he harassed a younger kid).
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?:
Like any gifted child who is under-stimulated, she becomes bored at school and thus, she gets herself into trouble. Mary defiantly disrupts class with her declarations of boredom. She has an issue with authority, sassing her teacher and her principal. She can be stubborn which might also be a strength but in her case, her stubbornness can get her into trouble because it orders on making her seem bratty and defiant. Again, she's seven so... she's just being a kid. Kids her age bore her. She feels alienated and sad because of this and she struggles to fit in.
She's also go a bit of a potty mouth, on occasion.
WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?:
When Mary was just a baby, her mother (Diane), a brilliant mathematician, killed herself, leaving her in the care of Diane's brother, Frank. This event shaped Mary's future completely. Frank felt responsible for his sister's death, for not seeing the signs or being there for her, so he is completely focused on making sure that Mary doesn't end up like her mother. This means he does all he can to make sure that she grows up as a 'normal child' doing normal things. He takes her away from his and Diane's mother, who would, undoubtedly, push Mary towards a life filled with academia the moment she started to show an aptitude or high intelligence. Diane didn't want that, she lived a high-pressure life of being a math prodigy and didn't get to really live a life, so she didn't want the same for her child.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?:
Mary is a kid. And like any kid, she wants to be liked by kids her own age. She wants to be accepted despite being different. She strives to learn, to read, to be challenged academically even if she can't always express that. She loves it.
But she also wants to be with Frank, her uncle and Fred, her BELOVED one-eyed cat.
WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?:
It depends on who you ask. It seems to me that most people would have a hard time seeing past her child genius status once they know of it. They forget there's a little girl underneath it all and just see how smart she is. But also they may think that her stubbornness and tendency to scowl means she's an angry, bratty child but she's just bored and needs more. But if you ask someone who loves her, like Frank or Roberta, they think she's wonderful and sweet and funny.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?:
As I said above, she's just a kid, who has normal kid desires. She wants to be liked, she doesn't like being bored. She's not shy, per say, but she loves her people (mostly Roberta and Frank).
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?:
She is seven, so she goes to the person she trusts, Frank. But if the crisis is because of him, she shuts down. She'll cry or she'll pout and avoid eye contact. Frank is good at drawing her out of her shell, however. She's still learning how to handle crisis but like many other kids her age, she cries, gets frustrated or scared and will lash out (she did hit Frank a few times when she felt as though he abandoned her).
WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
- Fred, her beloved cat.
- That Frank loves her most
- That she loves the beach and seashells
- That she spends Friday nights with Roberta, their neighbor.
- The Trachtenberg Method
I chose these five because they are important to her. Fred and Frank and Roberta are the center of her little world. The beach is special to her and Frank. And the Trachtenberg method is a way to do mental math which will lead her into slowly remembering how amazing she is at math.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:
Nada!
SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES:
Her physical weakness is that she's a seven year old. She has no powers or extras beyond her own brain-power, being a math genius and smarter than your average seven year old (or even adult). She's got a strong vocabulary and an even stronger personality.
INVENTORY:
- the red, girly dress that she wore on her first day of school
- a bag of ping pong balls
- chili the cat
- louie the cat
